He then bounced back in a pivotal Game 3 in the NLCS, tossing four scoreless innings against the Mets.
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers took Game 1 of the World Series 6-3 on Friday after a walk-off grand slam by Freddie Freeman in the bottom of the 10th — the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history.
For many years, a match-up between LA and NY, the two largest cities in the U.S., was not uncommon. The teams have faced off against one another in the World Series 11 times: more than any other pair of teams in the MLB. But this is the first time in 43 years they’ll be going head-to-head for the title.
• Freeman has now homered in five consecutive World Series games dating back to 2021 with the Braves. That’s tied for the longest streak in the Fall Classic, with Springer. Freeman has homered in his last three games this postseason, tying 1985 Bill Madlock for the longest streak in Dodgers postseason history.
NEW YORK — After winning the 2020 World Series, the Dodgers erased the frustration that came with their 32-year championship drought. What they didn’t do, however, was silence all the noise from the naysayers.
It’s fitting that the only Dodgers championship clinched at home was the first World Series ever played at Dodger Stadium. Sandy Koufax struck out 15 to beat Whitey Ford in Game 1, and the two had a rematch in Game 4 with Koufax pitching a complete game for a 2-1 Dodgers victory.

• Let’s take it a step further. Buehler also pitched Game 3 of the World Series in 2020, allowing one run on three hits over six innings. He’s the only pitcher in World Series history with three outings of at least five innings and four or fewer baserunners allowed – and they’re the first three World Series outings of his career.
This is an iconic Fall Classic that’s about to take place between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. When the World Series begins with Game 1 on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, it will be a clash of coastal behemoths who have been accumulating luminaries in anticipation of a moment just like this.
After the boycott of 1904, the World Series was played every year until 1994 despite World War I, the global influenza pandemic of 1918–1919, the Great Depression of the 1930s, America’s involvement in World War II, and even an earthquake in the host cities of the 1989 World Series. A breakdown in collective bargaining led to a strike in August 1994 and the eventual cancellation of the rest of the season, including the playoffs.
What happened to the 1904 World Series? The 1903 contest was a resounding success and represented the first step in healing the bruised egos of both the veteran National and fledgling American Leagues. Pittsburgh and Boston went head-to-head for eight games proving that great baseball between the two leagues was possible and that a merger would benefit the growth of the sport. Unfortunately, some owners still disagreed with the concept and in 1904, it was prematurely cancelled. John T. Brush, president of the National League champion New York Giants, refused to play the returning American League champion Boston Americans. He was quoted as stating that he refused to compete with a “representative of the inferior American League”. Surprisingly, Brush regretted the decision and later that year proposed to continue with the series as originally conceived. His about-face spawned the “Brush Rules,” a set of guidelines relating to the on-field play and off-field finances of the World Series which exists to this day.
The team with the best regular season record gets home field advantage in the World Series, meaning they get Games 1 and 2 at home, along with a potential Games 6 and 7. The other team gets Games 3 and 4, and a possible Game 5, at home.
